Job Description

We are seeking a mission-driven Physician to lead and deliver compassionate, high-quality medical care within a secure correctional facility. This role is ideal for professionals who value clinical autonomy, leadership opportunities, and meaningful impact in underserved communities.

As the Facility Physician , you’ll be responsible for direct patient care, overseeing treatment programs, and guiding a multidisciplinary healthcare team. You will play a key role in ensuring continuity of care, operational excellence, and compliance with national healthcare standards inside a structured institutional environment.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Oversight

  • Provide comprehensive medical services including exams, diagnosis, prescriptions, treatment plans, and minor procedures.

  • Make rounds to assess, treat, and follow up on inmate/resident health.

  • Triage and manage chronic, urgent, and emergent cases with high clinical judgment.

  • Facilitate preventive care, health education, and medical counseling.

Program & Leadership Management

  • Lead and guide clinical staff and treatment teams to ensure optimal patient care.

  • Establish clinical protocols, review outcomes, and maintain compliance with NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO standards.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in medical ethics, emergency procedures, and crisis response.

  • Collaborate closely with nurses, psychologists, administrators, and outside providers.

Administration & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate documentation of all medical services, procedures, and outcomes.

  • Monitor hospitalizations and facilitate early discharges when appropriate.

  • Assist with audits, policy creation, cost control, and accreditation readiness.

  • Participate in investigations, hearings, and compliance-related reviews.

Facility & Safety

  • Participate in safety inspections, emergency response drills, and inmate behavioral monitoring.

  • Ensure secure handling of medical equipment and records.

  • Maintain professionalism and calm demeanor in high-pressure or hostile interactions.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • M.D. or D.O. from an accredited medical school.

  • Valid, unrestricted physician license in the state of employment.

  • Board certification or eligibility in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine.

  • Active DEA license with prescriptive authority.

  • Current CPR/BLS certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of clinical experience, preferably in correctional medicine, emergency, or underserved settings.

  • Experience with minor surgical procedures and management of acute/chronic conditions.

  • Prior supervisory or program leadership experience is highly valued.

  • Strong communication, documentation, and EMR/EHR skills.
